Read the Contract Services Buyer's Guide
For some organization, it may not be necessary to establish an internal digital imaging and analysis workflow. Whether for a single project or for long term assistance, there are numerous specialist contract research organizations (CROs), reference labs and independent consultant pathologists who can handle your overflow or your entire workload. Here a few things you may wish to consider:
- Types of service There are a wide variety of services provided by these companies, e.g. Staining and scanning services, image analysis, biomarker discovery and validation. Check their list of specialities and specific experience through previous similar projects.
- Tissue specialties Some service providers are specialist in specific organ or tissue domains e.g. oncology, neuroscience, cell and gene therapy. You may want to check that your provider has the correct expertise for your project and has specific experience through previous similar projects.
- Image File formats Digital slides exist in numerous file formats, some standard, some in common use and yet others specific to a single vendor. What file formats will be provided to you by the service provider? Do you need to be able to share those files with third parties and how will they be given access. Will your collaborators need specialist software to read the images?
- Data output What will be the format of the project data provided to you? Will you be required to conduct your own analysis? Who will own the data? Will you be able to share with collaborators?
- Slide hosting Will the service provider be able to host the digital slides? Can you bring the image files in house or will you need to budget for third party slide hosting?
- Certified Pathologists? If the service provider will be issuing an analysis and judgement on your project, it may be important to check that the company has access to board certified pathologists/veterinary pathologist on staff who are correctly qualified to perform annotations, training and to certify the results for your projects.
- Research or clinical? CROs may specialize in clinical, clinical trials, research/biomarker discovery, or pre-clinical/GLP studies. It is important to ask for references if you have a specific need in mind. If your project involves a clinical assessment, check that your service provider is qualified and certified to perform clinical work and is using properly accredited systems.
