Fujifilm And Aws Combine For World’s First Fully Cloud-based Digital Pathology Solution At University Hospitals Of Leicester NHS Trust

The global leader in Digital Pathology, Fujifilm Healthcare, are working in collaboration with fellow Healthcare technology provider, Amazon Web Services (AWS), to deliver a world first at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is comprised of three separate sites, Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital, and Glenfield Hospital, all of which are transforming their Pathology delivery and reducing diagnosis timelines through digitalisation.

The implementation of Synapse® Pathology will take place across all three sites at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, supported by a fully cloud-based infrastructure provided by AWS. Fujifilm Healthcare and AWS boast a unique partnership, having already established a strong working relationship across multiple sites within the UK to help enable the digitisation of Histopathology in the UK. We are delighted to be joined by such a forward-thinking partner in the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust who value the benefits obtained through cloud-infrastructure.

Utilising an AWS cloud-based infrastructure, combined with the power of Synapse® Pathology, will allow the Trust to take advantage of the unmatched power cloud underpins with scalability, flexibility, multi-site deployment with cross-site sharing of cases, and the sustainability benefits, allowing for instant access to images, regardless of file size.

Across all three sites, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust will digitally scan over 400,000 slides per year, with predicted growth to nearly half a million. The functionality of cloud-infrastructure will allow them to scale and tailor their storage requirements as desired. With their predicted archive storage reaching 2 million slides during their contract, ensuring instant recall for prior images is essential.

Heath Hopewell, CSI IT Lead of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust details the reasoning behind why the Trust chose Fujifilm and their preference for cloud:

“We choose Fujifilm for their experience and expertise in digital pathology and their capability of integrating Synapse® Digital Pathology with our LIMS, having a solution that was fully cloud capable aligned with our strategy of moving away from local data centre management. Cloud gives us the flexibility to expand our solution easily and given the large storage volumes digital pathology consumes it’s good to have this capability at hand.”

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust expands our strong Fujifilm Healthcare customer base further now comprising over 20 sites and networks in the UK. Our platform has helped ease adoption challenges and empowering Pathologists by seamlessly integrating with laboratories and organisations with a powerful all-in-one solution.

Kayleigh Patterson, Product & Release Manager – Digital Pathology UK at Fujifilm Healthcare UK adds:

“This unique partnership is exciting for all involved. We are looking to completely revolutionise how the Trust provide their Pathology services and utilising a fully-cloud infrastructure is the perfect solution for their needs. This will create new opportunities for innovation and collaboration between the Trust’s Pathology teams, and Fujifilm Healthcare look forward to supporting their teams in the years ahead.”
