The Histopathology Department forms part of the Cellular Pathology directorate. The department has a workload of around 62 000 surgical requests per year, and provides a wide range of routine and specialised services. This presents an opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy, modern hospital laboratory. The service has replaced a significant amount of laboratory equipment and has recently introduced a specimen tracking system and digital pathology reporting. The service has UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation

As post holder, you will have an important role in supporting Biomedical Scientists, providing a high quality clinical laboratory service; belonging to a safe and compassionate healthcare service.

The post holder will be working in the cutting/embedding section and cut-up room, under the direction of state-registered and senior Biomedical Scientists. When competent, the post holder would be expected to use their own initiative, referring to Clinical Support Workers (Higher) and BMS staff as necessary. You will be expected to work in accordance with departmental and Trust Policies and Guidelines.

Your main duties will involve,

  • Receiving and checking specimens of tissue / organs etc. from operating theatres, wards, clinics, post mortem room, and G.P.s, with the request forms. Then giving the specimens and request form a unique identification number.
  • Assist in solving day-to-day problems, including incorrectly labelled specimens, follow appropriate quality and error logging procedures in the event of an incident. Communicate with pathology users regarding mislaid/ mis-labelled specimens.
  • Assist in “cut-up” dictation with pathologists and BMS staff. This includes working with recognisable body parts, products of conception containing recognisable fetal parts and post-mortem tissue which may cause distress. Clean working areas of tissue, faeces, mucus and blood.
  • To help with the safe storage and disposal of specimen pots and ensuring waste human tissue is disposed of appropriately.
  • Participate in the maintenance of laboratory equipment, including tissue processors, staining machines and tissue embedders, according to standard protocols. Report any equipment faults to senior BMS staff.
  • To use the laboratory information management system to input patient related information generated by themselves and other staff. This includes using MedTrak, WebTraK and PAS.

Part time: 34.5 hours per week. Routinely Monday – Friday between 07:00 and 17:00. Additional hours (7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 7am to 12 mid-day) may apply due to service demand/ change, during exceptional circumstances
