We are seeking a motivated trainee to join the Institute of Precision Diagnostics and Translational Medicine at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. The appointee will already hold a national training number in cellular pathology and already be a specialist trainee in an existing training scheme.

The post would be suited to a doctor seeking to complete a period of dedicated research, ideally as a period of “out of programme training” in support of a higher degree.

Appointments will be made at the relevant point on the SpR salary scale depending on prior experience and present salary.

The post is based at UHCW and the appointee will be required to deliver pathology support to the data scientist team working on a colon biopsy screening tool. This will include review and selection of cases, identification and marking up of regions of interest, explaining the principles of histopathology as applied to colon biopsies to data scientists, evaluating the performance of the algorithm providing advice and insight into the failures and successes of various iterations of the algorithm and providing some strategic insight into how the algorithm could be improved.

This post offers an opportunity to do research with Prof David Snead, in collaboration with the University of Warwick as part of PathLAKE. PathLAKE is one of 5 centres of excellence in digital pathology and radiology imaging and is establishing digitisation of cellular pathology in 4 major laboratories, Coventry, Nottingham, Oxford and Belfast, to deliver a programme of 5 new AI algorithms for cellular pathologists to use.https://www.pathlake.org. The PathLAKE team have also secured additional funding to complete a multi-site evaluation of an automated AI tool for bowel cancer screening and a key part of this role will be to support this project.
