Entry Level Research Officer, Band 3

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the Leeds Institute of Cancer & Pathology (LICAP), University of Leeds and the Cellular Pathology Department, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Both departments are based at St. James’s University Hospital and are well equipped and fully computerised. LICAP, in the Welcome Trust Brenner building, is one of the largest academic pathology units in the country and supports and performs translational research across a range of malignancies. The diagnostic histopathology service is delivered from a new state-of-the-art department in Bexley Wing where we process circa 70,000 surgical cases, 2,000 autopsy cases, and 15,000 non-gynaecological cytology cases per annum . Both departments host avant-garde digital pathology facilities with a number of scanners and power walls available for use.

We have a 5-year full time post available based across both LICAP and the Cellular Pathology Department. This is an exciting, industry sponsored new post aligned with an ambitious research programme deployed across both departments with a view to expand research capacity across all local pathology subspecialties and the creation of tissue and data-based repositories. As part of a broader academic and clinical team comprising of pathologists, oncologists and scientists, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all materials collected are compliant with Research Ethics Committee approval and the Human Tissue Act. Duties will include reviewing patient case notes and the creation of databases recording all material used as part of the study. Although the post is principally administrative in nature, there will be opportunity to engage in more hands-on activities such as archival diagnostic material collection, slide scanning and laboratory work if desired. A good understanding of handling human tissue/data in compliance with the Human Tissue Act and General Data Protection Regulations is critical to the post. Experience of the clinical software infrastructure used at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trusts would be a great advantage. The post is suitable for someone who is highly motivated, organised, enthusiastic, an excellent team player and who has a flexible approach to work and an ability to meet tight deadlines.
