In this role, we are seeking a CLIA Laboratory Technician to assist with the daily operation of the Clinical Trials Pathology lab (CTP). The technician will support testing personel by following standard operating procedure for sample intake and handling, equipment maintenance, reagent preparation, inventory, organization, and CLIA documentation, with oversight and guidance.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will work under the guidance of others involved in the laboratory or the associated research in performing the following tasks:
  • Receive and accession incoming samples including accurate labeling of cassettes and slides, routing, and tracking
  • Perform and document routine daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • File and organize slides, paraffin blocks, and paperwork
  • Package, ship, and track samples requiring return to outside laboratories
  • Participate in group meetings with laboratory staff, pathologists, and medical director
  • Prepare reagents from detailed laboratory procedures and document that quality control standards are being met
  • Peform periodic inventory of reagents and samples stored in CTP
  • Submit stained slides to digital pathology for scanning and manage the storing and sharing of images
  • Assist in organizing work and storage space and in general lab upkeep
  • Monitor hazardous waste levels and coordinate with EH&S when needed
  • Perform routine histology support as needed
  • Occasionally act as specimen courier between UWMC or SCCA and FHCRC
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

Qualifications:

  • The minimum requirement is a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with one year of formal or on the job training/experience in a laboratory setting
  • Familiarity with histotechnology is highly desirable but not required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is required
  • The successful technician must be able to work accurately and efficiently, be detail oriented, and work both independently and within a group. Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills are required
  • This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work positively in a customer oriented environment. In addition, the technician in this position must be flexible, independent, and skilled at organizing and prioritizing tasks
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer is desirable
In addition to job duties at Fred Hutch, this position also requires access to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which requires COVID-19 vaccination without exceptions.
