The Histopathology Department forms part of the Cellular Pathology directorate. This includes Histology, Cytology, Mortuary, Bereavement and Medical Examiner Services.

The department has a workload of around 62 000 surgical requests per year, and provides a wide range of routine and specialised services. This presents an opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy, modern hospital laboratory.

The service has:
  • replaced a significant amount of laboratory equipment
  • a specimen tracking system
  • introduced digital pathology reporting for some pathologists, with plans to expand this to all pathologists in the future. BMS staff also participate in specimen dissection and BMS reporting
  • UKAS ISO 15179 accreditation
As post holder, you will play a key role in the following areas:
  • Act as the quality manager with responsibility for the Cellular Pathology quality management system.
  • Assist in the overall management of the histopathology service.
  • Manage the education and training of Histopathology laboratory staff.
  • Ensure that the processes for the quality management system are established and maintained.
  • Investigate incidents and non-conformities
The laboratory operational hours are 07:00 to 17:00, Monday – Friday. Staff work within the operational hours, on rotation with other staff. There is also an out of hour’s on-call rota, which biomedical scientists cover on rotation.

Full Time: 37.5 hours per week
