The Philips Digital and Computational Pathology (DCP) venture started in 2007. The venture is establishing a worldwide business for total Digital Pathology Solutions encompassing an Ultra-Fast Scanner for digitization of microscope tissue slides and a Pathology Image Management System. The venture aims at leveraging multiple Philips assets and capabilities (brand, market channel, technology) for establishing the total solution and being the 1st to market to establish a dominant market position. The market launch of the first solutions was in 2011. The venture has an installed base in US, Europe and Asia and keeps expanding.

Our mission: In a world with increasing challenges for cancer diagnostic procedures and quality of patient care, we want to be number one in empowering Pathologists with Digital Pathology Solutions via the best Pathology scanners, Image Management System, workflow and Image Analytics solutions available. This helps the pathology laboratory and the pathologists to work more effectively, leading to higher quality diagnosis and as a result better patient care.

In this role, you will strengthen the Imaging Scanners Systems team with brain- and man-power to ensure the timely release of high quality products and systems to ensure the continued growth in an agile environment. You will work on the development and implementation of scanner solutions on top of Philips Digital & Computational Pathology (DCP) portfolio, which will help pathologist to improve the quality and speed of their work.

You are responsible for

  • Working as part of the Imaging Scanners Systems team with external partners, customers, and engineering and research teams in a multi-disciplinary and x-functional setting developing pathology scanners for Philips Digital & Computational Pathology.

  • The exploration of the design, the realization, the integration, the testing and the debugging of specific components (e.g. Vision Engine, focus analysis, log-files analysis), and understand and communicate consequences of the design on the architecture.

  • Providing overall technical leadership and oversee full systems product release/life cycle management to ensure quality and compliance.

  • Translating user and business requirements into product requirements, high level product design, while optimizing integration and verification.

  • Performing system decomposition and allocation of derived requirements down to HW/SW element and part, level, and related traceability.

  • Setting up, analyzing and interpreting the results of product experiments. Answer questions by using appropriate statistical techniques on available data.

  • Developing metrics and prototypes that can be used to drive business decisions.

  • Developing the work with focus on customer needs and technological competitiveness, and keeps this outside-in approach in mind for created designs.

  • Developing based on the functional, non-functional – and design-specifications and test, analyze and verify the performance.

  • Debugging and analyzing systematically in case of technically challenges, define next steps, draw conclusions and present to architects, (senior) system engineers and developers.

  • Leading technical & design reviews, analyze trade-off of product/system design specifications and interfaces, and determine feasibility of potential solutions.

  • Ensuring full Product Safety Risk Management in a regulation compliant manner.

  • In case of technical challenges occurring at the customer or during the manufacturing process, performing hands-on debugging and analysis to provide prompt solutions towards resolving the immediate challenges.

  • Keeping up-to-date with new technology developments.

  • Driving activities and seeking opportunities for continuous improvement.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need a customer-first attitude and the following

  • A Masters or PhD degree, preferably in either (applied) Physics, Electrical engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or similar.

  • At least 5 years of experience as a scientist, architect, system engineer or designer with knowledge and understanding of:

    • Product development and product creation

    • Computer vision, image analysis & processing

    • MATLAB , C / C++, Python, (or similar)

    • Statistical modeling & analysis

    • Optical, electrical and mechatronic systems

    • Developing prototypes and transferring the concept to development, industrialization and service, incl. troubleshooting of the concept as well as the productized software

    • Roadmap & planning

    • Systems and system integration

    • Experimental setup designs

  • You are a self-starter with a pragmatic mindset and lean thinking/ continuous improvement

  • You are a generalist with hands-on experience

  • Have a flexible and open attitude with good communication skills in English

  • Affinity and experience with working in cross functional teams

  • Focus on Good Documentation Practices (GDP)

  • Experience with Healthcare Regulatory aspects (FDA 820.x, ISO13485, etc.) is preferred
