The Cellular Pathology Department at Calderdale Royal Hospital is looking to recruit a passionate Specialist Biomedical Scientist to work in our friendly team.

The successful applicant will have the ability to lead and encourage others and have the IBMS Specialist Postgraduate Portfolio in Cellular Pathology or equivalent and hold current HCPC registration.

We will consider a suitably qualified HCPC registered Band 5 Biomedical Scientist with Cellular Pathology experience who will be expected to complete the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology within 2 years following the 6 month probation period.

Rotate on a regular basis through the different sections of the department and take part in the extended working rota. To ensure health and safety is maintained, train junior members of staff, and be involved with quality and service development through laboratory and clinical audit. Continuous professional development will be essential for this post and further study will be encouraged.

The department is UKAS accredited and IBMS approved for training. Cellular Pathology covers histology, non-gynae cytology, andrology and the mortuaries. The successful candidate will be involved in health and safety, training and quality in all areas of the department.

We currently process approximately 28000 histology samples, around 9000 immunohistochemistry tests using the Ventana Benchmark Ultra, 2500 non-gynae samples, and 3000 andrology samples.

We are committed to quality and improvement, use LEAN methods of working and utilise the Vantage tracking system. We are currently introducing digital pathology to the department.

The successful candidate will act in a scientific role and to carry out all routine investigations within the department, following such training as may be necessary, ensuring the quality of the service. To assist in the provision of the Cellular Pathology and mortuary service for the trusts hospitals and CCGs by providing specialist knowledge and technical skills to process, analyse, understand and interpret results of diagnostic tests.
