In a keynote talk presented at SPIE Medical Imaging 2023 (San Diego, February 19–23), Professor Mark Steyvers from the University of California, Irvine, discussed the promises and pitfalls of AI-assisted decision making. He also presented data from his research on the effectiveness of AI-assisted decisions, as well as how humans and machines can efficiently form mental models to establish a more effective collaboration.

Digital pathology has been integral to my practice from my earliest training in histopathology for breast and liver cancers at Leeds Teaching Hospital. At the early stages of my pathology training, I was aware of some of the benefits of digital pathology but was skeptical as to how well it was actually going to work in practice; I have since become a digital convert due to the benefits this provides to my clinical practice.

SPIE Conference Part 3: Region of Interest Detection May Improve WSI Classification Performance of Patch-based Models

In a new study, researchers at Bilkent University in Turkey investigated the effect of region of interest (ROI) detection on the classification performance of patch-based models when applied to whole slide images (WSIs). The researchers compared the WSI classification performance of patch-based models when the patches were extracted from the entire image and when they were sampled only within the ROIs. The study showed that using the predicted ROIs for patch sampling significantly improved WSI classification. The study findings were presented at SPIE Medical Imaging 2023, which took place in San Diego on February 19–23.

SPIE Conference Part 2: New Study Shows Limited Generalizability of DenseNet Models for Cancer Detection

In a new study, researchers at Case Western Reserve University and Emory University investigated the cancer detection ability of Dense Convolutional Network (DenseNet) algorithms when applied to different types of prostate tissues. The study showed that the algorithms performed better on their own sample type than on different sample types.
