Since deploying in spring 2019, Region Skåne have been a digital pathology trendsetter across Europe and beyond. As one of the first labs to digitise their workflow, Region Skåne were a key target for Pathology News’ Key Labs Team.

The Big Picture — Why Region Skåne Matters

The Pathology News team visited Region Skåne, Lund, Sweden in March 2026. During our time in Lund we discussed why they made the move to digital, their journey, the decisions that shaped that journey, and the challenges they encountered along the way.

The four medical centres that make up Region Skåne represent one of the most advanced digital pathology implementations in Europe. Serving a large regional healthcare system, the programme has transformed not just how pathology is practiced in Sweden but on an international level  as well, leading by example.

Context matters. A lab’s ability to deploy digital pathology is shaped by far more than interest, space, and finances. National governance and regulatory frameworks set the terms, and the way each lab is structured is ultimately a product of that environment.
