The Pathology News team visited Region Skåne, Lund, Sweden in March 2026. During our time in Lund we discussed why they made the move to digital, their journey, the decisions that shaped that journey, and the challenges they encountered along the way.
The four medical centres that make up Region Skåne represent one of the most advanced digital pathology implementations in Europe. Serving a large regional healthcare system, the programme has transformed not just how pathology is practiced in Sweden but on an international level as well, leading by example.

Storage and network provide the backbone for handling large whole slide images, but it is integration, particularly between PACS, LIS, and scanners that proves most complex. Here, standardisation through formats like DICOM becomes essential.
