The company behind SierraSlide, PathQA has announced major adoption of its DICOM-ICC functionality with over 20 viewer options now available and end users now actively leveraging the software to convert their file types to the DICOM standard.

First introduced in 2025, DICOM-ICC enables whole slide images (WSI) from any scanner to be converted into the DICOM format with embedded scanner-specific ICC profiles too. In practice, this means that users can make use of the superior DICOM format using a single viewer to work with images generated across different scanners, sites, and systems that, in addition, can be displayed with corrected colour profiles.

While workflows have become increasingly digitised, variability in colour representation and reliance on proprietary file formats have held back the evolution of digital pathology deployment: limiting interoperability, introducing diagnostic uncertainty, and creating challenges for AI deployment.

Since DICOM-ICC’s initial launch, the PathQA team has been working on growing their list of compatible image management systems (IMS), now expanding to include platforms such as AIRA Matrix AIRADHI, Pathogate.net by PathoPulse, and QuPath, alongside successful testing across a growing number of open-source DICOM viewers including Slim, the Google DICOMweb Viewer, and Mainecoon. In total, the list of compatible platforms exceeds 20 viewer/IMS options.
