In order for labs to meaningfully digitise their histopathology workflows and continually improve them for better patient care, the pathology community needs more practical insight and lived experience.
Every lab is different. Individually they serve different patient pools with different expectations, are confined to different spaces, and operate in geographies with different regulations and funding. No two labs are the same.
While the prospect and benefits of digital pathology are widely known and acknowledged, the means to implement digital technologies in your own histopathology environment remain for many labs, an unknown.
Which whole slide scanner should you look to procure? How do you go about connecting digital systems to one another? How can you bring your workforce on side to help them realise the benefits of implementation?
The Pathology News Technology Buyers’ Guide, released in 2022, used product specifications and allowed users to compare solutions like slide scanners side by side. This supported procurement but for the lab manager seeking firsthand experience and a wider knowledge of the practicalities of implementation, it left them with questions.
Key Labs builds on this comparison tool.
While the Technology Buyers’ Guide helps laboratories identify the most appropriate solutions for their histopathology workflow, the new Key Labs initiative explores how digital pathology is actually implemented in practice. It offers insight into the decisions, systems, challenges, and lessons that shape a functioning digital workflow.
Each Key Lab showcase will include lab tours, technology stack schematics, video interviews, and articles. Our editorial team will tell each lab’s story and ask:
- Why did they go digital in the first place?
- What technologies and systems do they use?
- What are the practical realities of digitising?
- What challenges did they encounter along the way?
- What comes next?
The Key Labs story starts with Region Skåne in Lund, Sweden. As one of the first laboratories in Europe to go digital, it felt only right that this story starts in Lund.
