Lumea’s BxBoard® Named Finalist in Utah Innovation Awards MedTech Category
Revolutionary sponge-fixation transport system recognized for modernizing prostate cancer diagnostics and preserving tissue integrity.

Lumea today announced its BxBoard® biopsy transportation and preservation container has been ranked third in the MedTech Devices & Diagnostics category for the 2026 Utah Innovation Awards. Presented by Utah Business and Nucleus, the awards recognize the state’s most pioneering technological advancements driving meaningful change across Utah’s healthcare landscape.

“We are thrilled to be ranked among the top three innovators in this category and honored to stand alongside so many visionary Utah companies,” said James Thackeray, Lumea CEO. “This recognition validates our commitment to solving a decades-old problem in pathology and ensuring clinicians have the best possible information to determine treatment pathways for their patients.”

The BxBoard replaces the standard formaldehyde jars historically used for prostate biopsies, which frequently led to tissue breakage, curling, and compromised specimen integrity. Lumea’s purpose-built container allows up to six delicate prostate biopsies to be placed flat on a formalin-soaked sponge within individual lanes. This design preserves tissue orientation from the moment of collection, fundamentally transforming downstream workflows for lab technicians.

Currently deployed across more than 130 U.S. clinics, clinical studies show the BxBoard dramatically improves specimen quality compared to traditional jar methods. Key clinical impacts include:

  • A 35% reduction in core fragmentation and a 28% increase in measurable core length.
  • A 2.1x reduction in test cancellations due to insufficient quantity or RNA degradation.
  • A 92.5% reduction in formaldehyde use per case, significantly reducing lab tech exposure to carcinogens.
  • An 83% reduction in collection containers, blocks, and slides required for diagnosis.
